Pala Dynasty
Nalanda, Bihar

Height: 16 in (41 cms)

The Pala Dynasty ruled Bengal and Bihar from the 8th to the 12th century A.D. They created fine sculptures in stone and bronze. Even after the decline of the Palas, the artistic traditions of the dynasty provided inspiration to neighboring countries like Burma, Nepal and Indonesia.

This stone sculpture from the earlier phase of the Pala Dynasty represents the most important event in the life of Buddha. It shows the first sermon given by the Buddha on receiving enlightenment. On achieving the zenith seated under a Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, the Buddha proceeded to Sarnath. There he sat in a deer park and gave his first sermon to a group of five rishis who had been his companions during his earlier austerities. He thus set in motion the wheel of law.

This spectacular subject has been brought to life in this sculpture. Buddha can be seen seated with his hands in Dharmachakra Mudra.
