Mid 18th Century

Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

Size: 5.5 x 4.5 in (14 x 11.4 cm)

This colourful painting is from the Central Indian region. Orchha in Madhya Pradesh, from where it originates, produced some beautiful paintings.

A beautiful young princess is shown richly attired and bejeweled. She sits on a carpet on her terrace with a companion comforting her with a fly-whisk. The charming princess has a lovely complexion. Her face is chubby and has a pink tone. She wears a short blouse and a long skirt of fine material. A thin veil covers her head and part of her body. She wears multiple necklaces of gold, precious stones and pearls, as well as large earrings, bangles of gold, armbands and head decoration. The princess rests against a large bolster as she sits on a splendid carpet with fine foliated work and orange flowers on it. Her female companion is beautifully dressed too. She wears a short choli and ghagra. Her thin veil covers her head and shoulders. Her face has a dreamy look. Her jewellery is of gold, pearls and beads. In her right hand she holds a whisk of peacock feathers and in her left hand, two blooming lotus flowers. The princess looks at her two pet birds. One is a parrot and the other a koel. There is a high boundary wall with a small portion of a door visible. It has an orange, rolled up curtain. Trees with colourful leaves and flowers can be seen over the top of the wall. The artist has made use of lively green, orange and blue colours and created a wonderful effect with a simple white wall as a background.
