The present lot is a classic Victorian tea caddy, with mother of pearl and red velvet lining, opening to two lidded compartments, the second of which was most likely used to store a different kind of tea or sugar. The purpose of a tea caddy and the reason for its embellishment owes itself to the high value of tea when it was first introduced to Europe from China sometime in the 17th century. The object then became a very fashionable accessory for the drawing room of a home and eventually a sought after collectible today.
