The beautiful mountains of Afghanistan have yielded precious gems from time immemorial. Turquoise, lapiz lazuli and ruby have been mentioned by ancient travellers and traded along the silk road through the Hindu Kush mountains. In the 1970s emeralds were discovered in the Panjshir Valley. Chemically comparable to emeralds from the Colombian mines, Panjshir gems are large and light in colour.
