Coloured Diamonds
Diamonds have the reputation of being the quintessentially colourless stone. Generally, they are more highly prized the "whiter" i.e. the more colourless they are. However this is not the whole story. Diamonds are actually found in a wide range of colours but some of them such as pink, green, dark blue and canary yellow are very rare and command a value of their own. In the trade they are known as, "fancies".

An absolutely pure, ‘white' or colourless diamond is composed of carbon atoms arranged in a perfect network, whereby none of the light falling on a diamond is absorbed by the stone; rather, it is internally reflected back to the viewer, giving the diamond a completely colorless appearance. Diamonds of such purity and atomic integrity, however, are not commonly known to exist. During their crystallization, diamonds absorb a number of atoms and impurities. These atoms interfere with the light waves and can, as is in the case of this diamond, create a beautiful colour.

Given the variety and scarcity of natural coloured diamonds, a special colour grading scale apart from the normal D to Z colour scale has established to classify and appraise the quality of their colour. Known as the fancy colour scale, it ranges from Faint to Fancy Vivid, describing the intensity of a coloured diamond in addition to the type of colour.

The 42.02 carat Forevermark Fancy Yellow Diamond

This stunning, naturally coloured and brilliant cut, fancy yellow diamond stands apart in a league of illustrious and famous fancy coloured diamonds, several of which, like the infamous Hope, trace their origins back to India. These include the mysterious Florentine, the Porges, the Red Cross, the Tiffany Yellow, the Allnatt, and the Incomparable, the third largest diamond ever cut.

Also known as canary diamonds, naturally yellow coloured stones such as this one, are extremely rare and valuable, representing only 0.1 percent of all natural diamonds. The yellow coloration is caused by the presence of large, even-numbered clusters of nitrogen atoms, which affect the way in which the stone absorbs and reflects light.
