Rama and Laxmana were popular iconographies in an area dominated by the Jagannath cult. The area was later assimilated by the mainstream Vaishnava sect. These masks were most likely used in the Shahi Jatra, a performance recreating episodes from the Ramayana. Alternatively, they could have been made for Ramleela, a popular enactment of the life of Rama
