Burman`s carefully colored creations are a fragile interlacing of private fantasy and historically symbolic motifs. The product of a joyous imagination, his subject matter is a blend of Eastern and Western influences. References to Indian myths combine with allusions to Biblical themes. For example, In Front of the Church is imbued with a religious aura but the sacred, as it is revealed here, is not the preserve of any singular dogma. As a family sits outside the entrance of a place of worship, the Christian connotations of "church" are countered by the presence of animals - suggesting motifs from Hindu myths.

"The imagery, which also draws from Hindu iconography, familial scenes, has about it an air of reminiscence and nostalgia, rendered all the more effective by the impression of tranquility and quiescence. There is a complete blend of two cultures in which he feels equally at home." (p. 19, Isabelle Eberhardt, "At Home in the World", Apparao Galleries, Exhibition Catalogue 2003)
