Jitish Kallat's early works, often large-scale canvases, explore a range of urban references. The gritty underbelly of Mumbai, which the artist calls home, along with self-portraits and autobiographical elements, provide the backdrop for many of these billboard-style works. In the present lot, the foreground is almost entirely covered with a looming image of Kallat; upon closer inspection, however, one finds that the margins of the canvas feature references to children and the innocence of youth. Partly nostalgic, partly cautionary, this canvas documents the simultaneous growth and decay of the heaving metropolis.
