Edwin Mullins first heard of F.N. Souza when Victor Musgrave, Souza's London dealer and the owner of Gallery One, showed him a copy of the artist's book 'Words & Lines' in the late 1950s. A journalist with a passion for art, Mullins found Souza's writing and drawings powerful, vibrant and different from anything he was seeing in London at the time. Soon, Musgrave introduced the two, who became fast friends in a short period of time. Thus, when Anthony Blond decided to publish a monograph on Souza's work in the early 1960s, it is not surprising that the artist requested Mullins to write and edit it. Mullins also selected the art works that would be featured in this volume along with his text, carefully balancing the passion and angst of Souza's large canvases with the minimal sensuousness of the line drawings that had first attracted him to the artist's work. Soon after the book was published in 1962, Mullins was appointed Art Critic for The Sunday Telegraph, a prestigious position in London art circles. Today, this out-of-print volume is recognized as the most seminal publication on F.N. Souza, and one of the first monographs ever published on an Indian artist.
