Aiyanar, believed to be the son of Lord Shiva, has great significance in the southern states of India. In various regions he is the village deity who serves as their protector. In this miniature bronze he is seen seated holding a whip in his hand, one of his various attributes. His hair is depicted flowing out gracefully in jatas, similar to his father’s locks, highlighting their bond. His posture is that of a yogi, one hand resting on his raised leg, a common way in which he is depicted even in stone carvings. He holds a whip in his hand, one of his various attributes. The aged patination on this piece adds to the allure of this miniature bronze.
