Private Collection, New Delhi

This crouching male figure with extended arms and elongated fingers appears to be a ferocious demon. Typical Kushan facial features are visible, along with delicate jewellery like the cylindrical ear ornaments, a choker necklace and a band crossing over the chest. Across Indian art, artists, especially sculptors, have repeatedly portrayed demons and explored the varied ways in which they can be depicted. The subject offers great scope to bring out artistic capabilities since the demons can be sculpted with uniquely expressive and unusual features.
