A Large Meiji Period Japanese Satsuma figure of a wise-man clad in ceremonial robes with a phoenix, symbolizing longevity, immortality, new hope and the triumph of good over evil. He is wearing richly decorated headgear on his elongated head which signifies wisdom and intellectual prowess. He is holding a staff. The jovial expression is the harbinger of joy and prosperity.
