CAUCASIAN CARPET

Circa late 19th century
Handwoven, wool, natural dyes
97.25 x 47.25 in (247 x 120 cm)

A dramatic red ground carpet from the Caucasus mountains. The vertical central axis is composed of four interconnected diamonds, each of which is filled with concentric crab shaped icons. The remaining area of the central panel is completely filled with dotted squares, animals and crab shapes. The composite effect creates the illusion of “confetti” being scattered over a carnival. Two borders surround the perimeter, one containing stacked paisley botehs and the other one is filled with stacked crabs and scorpions to ward off the evil eye. Outstanding silky fleecy high altitude wool.

There is a black fabric sleeve sown on the back of the carpet in case it is desired to be hung
