CAUCASIAN CARPET

Circa late 19th century
Handwoven, wool, natural dyes
96.75 x 48 in (245.5 x 122 cm)

A highly unusual carpet from the Caucasus mountains. The composition appears to be inspired by a prayer carpet with what appears to be two prayer arches on both the top and bottom end. The tomato red field contains a rectangular form in the vertical central axis, flanked with arms on both sides. Neatly organized fertility iconography fills the central rectangle as well as the interfacing narrow sections on either side. Three borders frame the central field. The two inner and outer minor borders are filled with barberpole inspired diagonal colourful stripes and the middle border contains stacked reciprocal ramshorn symbols.

There is a black fabric sleeve sown on the back of the carpet in case it is desired to be hung
