Satish Gujral was a truly multidisciplinary artist, working with painting, sculpture, murals, architecture and interior design over the course of his decades-long career. A search for a modernism that was deeply rooted in the Indian tradition underpinned all his artistic endeavours.

A search for a modernism that was deeply rooted in the Indian tradition underpinned all his artistic endeavours.

Gujral was witness to the horrors of Partition at a young age, and this experience deeply affected his artistic expression. In the following decade, Gujral received a scholarship to study at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, where he served as an apprentice to renowned artists Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, who were pioneers of the muralist movement at the time. Inspired by them, Gujral similarly explored painting large fresco murals himself, and was frequently commissioned to paint them in India and abroad.
