UMA-MAHESHWARA

The Pala Dynasty ruled Bengal and Bihar from the 8th to the 12th century AD. They created fine sculptures in stone and bronze. Even after the decline of the Palas, the artistic traditions of the dynasty provided inspiration to neighbouring countries like Myanmar, Nepal and Indonesia.

The present lot, a 12th century Pala bronze sculpture from Bihar, shows Uma-Maheshwara, the combined form of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. This depiction of Hindu deities is rare, considering the majority of Pala bronzes are Buddhist in theme.
