The Crites Collection, meticulously assembled over five decades by Niloufar and Mitchell Crites, is widely regarded as one of the most significant private repositories of Indian folk, tribal, tantric, and outsider art. Their journey began in the 1970s, inspired by Mitchell Crites’ profound engagement with India’s indigenous art traditions and his pioneering work in reviving traditional stone crafts such as intricate inlay and carved jaalis (latticed screens).

Each work in the collection has been personally chosen by the couple, reflecting a deep commitment to preserving and honouring the rich visual languages of India’s diverse tribal communities. The highlights of their folk?art selection include masterpieces by acclaimed artists such as Jangarh Singh Shyam, Jivya Soma Mashe, Lado Bai, Bhuri Bai, Teju Jogi, and Jodhaiya Bai Baiga—as well as promising younger talents like Baldev Mandavi, Govind Jogi, and many others. The tantric art holdings feature visionary works by Acharya Vyakul, Kaluram Panchal, and Badri Narayan Pandit, while the outsider art segment showcases powerful pieces by Nagdas and Nannu Singh.
