Born in 1935, the artist enrolled at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Chennai. Here, he joined the Progressive Painters’ Association, established by the artist K C S Paniker in 1944. P Perumal sought to revive traditional artistic techniques by transforming the use of line in his works. Influenced by his childhood spent in a village in Tamil Nadu, P Perumal often depicted scenes from rural life in his works. He imbued his figures with an innocence and quiet strength through carefully constructed postures, often leaving the viewer with a sense of promise and hope for the future.

A prolific artist, P Perumal also taught at the Government High School in Chennai from 1959 to 1961 and at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Chennai in 1988, when he was the recipient of a Senior Fellowship from the Department of Culture. His works are a part of important national collections such as the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the National Art Gallery of Chennai, as well as private collections in the USA, Germany and South Korea.
