In the early 1950s, Paniker worked in a figurative style, painting groves, canals and crowds. Here, the figures lack solid anatomical form; they reflect a nostalgic memory of the artist's childhood in Ponnani capturing the rhythm of the plebeian village life of Kerala. It reflects Paniker's mastery of the watercolour medium and the pulse and fluency with which he worked.
