Although mentioned in retrospection, the result of his desire to search for something more than technique had begun manifesting from the early 60s. Following his years in France and the profound influence the French landscape had on him, Raza was led to introspect and project a personal idiom on canvas. The metaphor of nature and its boundless dimensions deeply influenced him, as did post- impressionists Cezanne and Gauguin, and in the latter's works Raza noticed something closer to India. Pommiers is a bold appliqué of blues, greens and reds, all merging into an expressionistic palette of an apple orchard. The setting is not constructed from elements. Mood and emotion manifest onto canvas, evoking an experience of nature rather than a vision of it. Although far removed from any recognisable shapes of leaves or apples, their textures are conveyed through vigorously applied staccato brush strokes.
