A RARE COLONIAL INDIAN TRAVEL WATER CANTEEN

Silver, Lead, Fabric
3.14 kg (gross)
13.5 in high with tumbler

A very rare late 19th or very early 20th Century fabric-covered travelling water canteen with silver detail. The canteen comes with its original fitted tumbler and screw-top lid also of silver.

The silver embellishment to the front centre can be unscrewed to reveal a hollow tube, most probably for ice to keep contents cool in the summer or hot coal to keep the liquids warm in the winter months. The carrier strap has solid silver buckles, and rests on a circular silver base. This beautifully preserved piece is believed to have been made for an individual of high social rank, most probably used for travel during colonial times.
