Pinguli is a town in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, where the Thakar tribal community is based. The Thakars are renowned for their ritual performances and unique story-telling arts that use painted images, and leather and shadow puppets. In the audio-visual 'chitrakathi' or picture-story form, a 'sutradhar' or story-teller narrates a tale set to music, using painted images like those in the present lot to illustrate each of its scenes or events. Most Pinguli Chitrakathi paintings relate stories from the two Sanskrit epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
