Bastar is a predominantly tribal district in south Chhattisgarh, where various art and craft traditions with important socio-religious functions are practiced. The present lot represents 'Banjarin Mata', part of the tribal pantheon of Bastar. Here, the goddess wears several necklaces and an elaborate crown. In her hands she holds a flower and a group of peacock feathers. The plate at the apex of the decorative 'prabha' that arches over her shoulders is used to place offerings like grains of rice.

Created using the 'lost wax' or cire perdue method of casting by professional metal casters known as 'ghadvas', the fine detailing of this piece demonstrates the skill and precision of the craftspeople of Bastar.
