Nandi, also known as Basaveshwara and Nandikeswara, is the 'vahana' or vehicle, messenger and door guardian of Lord Shiva. Here, Nandi is portrayed in a standing position. Apart from this unusual posture, the piece has a strong presence, which makes it appealing and interesting. Sculptures like these were used in temples as processional elements or placed before the icon of Shiva.
