Fil Paya or the Elephant's foot is one of the most famous motifs in Afghan carpets; it is an octagon divided into four qurdrants of alternating colors with a square in the centre. The octagons most often appear in vertical rows of three in continous chain, the spaces between the octagons has tiny geometric patterns. The most typical colors are like the ones seen in this carpet - brick reds, browns and dull yellow. The central field occupies most of the carpet with the border comprising of interlocking diamonds.
