SAROUK RUNNER - PERSIAN

Approx. 12ft 3in x 3ft 3in (374.9 x 100.5 cms)
Wool pile on cotton foundation, natural dye

This runner measuring over 12 feet in length and 3 feet in width is in great condition and has a beautiful brown abrash (or graduation in the hues caused by the use of natural dyes in this case walnut).The floral bouquets are placed in a single column interspersed with birds.There is a row of boteh (or the pear drop motif) that runs along the inside edge of the border, which is an unusual feature. The border is composed of rosettes.
Sarouk is in north of Arak (Sultanabad), this region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th Century through the early 20th Century.In the early 20th Century, a vast number of Sarouks with all over floral patterns were woven in shades of red to suit the tastes of the North American market were being exported.However it is rugs woven in the pre 1940 era are of a better quality.
