The word shawl is derived from the Persian word 'shal'. Embroidered shawls were made onlysince the 19th century that too by an Armenian merchant in a bid to lower production cost andescape high levels of taxation associated with 'Kanni' Shawls. Though initially seen as analternate means of production the embroidered shawl or 'Amlikar' as it is known in Kashmiri are equally labor intensive and have a high level of craftsmanship.
This breathtaking shawl is of finest quality of Pashmina in beige color and the embroidery is saturated dull pink. The high degree of skill is established by the fact that the front and the back of the shawl cannot be told apart.The borders have a stylized flame motif recalling the evocative lyrics of Urdu poetry.The four corners have graceful boteh's or the tear drop.
