Fil Paya or the Elephant's foot is the most famous motif of the Ersari people; Ersari tribes are live in Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan.This particular piece is from Afghanistan.
The Fil paya is an octagon divided into four quadrants of alternating colors with a square in the centre.The octagons most often appear in vertical rows of in continuous chain, the spaces between the octagons have tiny geometric patterns.The most typical colors for a Ersari are like the ones seen in this rug - brick reds and browns.The central field occupies most of the carpet with the border comprising of interlocking rhomboids.
