Faiza Butt was born in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1973. She attended the National College of Arts from where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in 1993. The same year, she was awarded the Berger Gold Medal for best student of the year. Faiza Butt was born in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1973. She attended the National College of Arts from where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in 1993. The same year, she was awarded the Berger Gold Medal for best student of the year. Leter, Butt studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, from where she obtained a Master’s degree in painting and a teaching certificate from the Institute of Education.

In 1995, the artists completed a residency at the Bartle Arts Trust in Durban thanks to a UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary. There she held workshops for women from shantytowns, presented talks at museums and galleries and had a solo show at the BAT Centre.

Given her personal experience of being born into a family of five sisters, she feels very strongly about feminist themes. Her exhibition “Three Women Show” at Vadehra Art Gallery in New Delhi was pivotal in the improvement of cultural relations between the neighbouring nations, underlining their shared background and cultural links.

Faiza Butt also finds inspiration for her works in everyday life, especially focusing on issues such as identity (gender/cultural). Through her work, she reflects on her personal cross-cultural experiences, and conveys the insecurity and the impermanence of our lives.

Butt’s body of work is characterized by the merging of photography and embroidery created with passion and technical rigour. She uses powerful journalistic images and texts, re-adapting them according to her responses to each. Using very simple materials such as ink, she creates incredibly detailed works dense with meaning.

Faiza Butt has exhibited her works extensively in Europe, the Middle East, South Asia and the United States. Her work can also be found in private and public collections around the world.
