Khadim Ali was born in Quetta, Pakistan, in 1978, and has family links in Bamiyan and Ghazni in Afghanistan. He started studying Persian miniature painting in 1998 in Teheran, and then attended the National College of Arts, Lahore, where he trained in the same field and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in 2003. In 2012, Ali completed a Master’s degree in Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales, Sydney.

He started studying Persian miniature painting in 1998 in Teheran, and then attended the National College of Arts, Lahore, where he trained in the same field and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in 2003. In 2012, Ali completed a Master’s degree in Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales, Sydney.

The monumental statues of Buddha in Bamiyan are one of the recurrent motifs in Ali’s body of work, along with characters and stories from the Shahnamah. His work is characterized by the miniature style, and draws on epics and poetry as well as contemporary political issues of resistance, loss and renewal. After returning from a trip to Afghanistan, the artist created a series of works referring to the situation of the children growing in a country ravaged by war. He especially focused on the impact of violence and war on the children’s minds. In more recent works, Ali has used drawings made by these children as the basis for his paintings.

Ali was awarded the Haji Sharif Award in Miniature Painting from the National College of Arts, Lahore, in 2005. The next year, he won a residency at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, and in 2007, another at Art Initiative, Tokyo. The artist’s work has been extensively exhibited in Pakistan and internationally.

Ali lives and works between Sydney, Quetta and Kabul.
