The term 'jhalla', in a wider sense, can be applied to chains connected over the forehead in various ways, but is more specifically used to describe separate silver chains of simple patterns that are attached to studs in the ear lobe. While it can be worn separately, the 'jhalla' is known to be worn as a part of a composition of headbands ('jhela'), studs ('toti'), and bell-shaped pendants ('jhumra') in districts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Elaborate designs on the 'toti', especially floral designs, indicate high status and affluence. Different tribes refer to the 'jhalla' in different ways and hence, a variety of designs exist in different regions of the states.
