A PAIR OF SILVER AND GEMSET NOSE RINGS

Silver, coral and glass beads

20th century
Himachal Pradesh

Ayurvedic medicine associates the location of the nostril piercing with the female reproductive system, and states that nose piercing eases childbirth among other benefits. From Kanyakumari to Kashmir, the nose ring - in a variety of shapes and forms - was known to be a part of a woman's traditional attire. In Himachal Pradesh and other northern regions, large decorative nose rings were popular; the more embellished the ring, the richer the family was believed to be. Women from the Pahari tribe, who live in the mountainous regions of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarkhand, and Nepal, are known to wear large hooped silver nose rings, like those included in the present lot, studded with various combinations of silver and glass beads and semi-precious stones.
