A PAIR OF BRASS ARMLETS

Brass

20th century
Nagaland

The brass armlets, forged from thick rods, have dot-punched patterns on the overlapping expanded convex terminal heads. They were worn by members of the Angami Tribe, one of the major tribes of Nagaland, but were likely made in Manipur. The heavy weight of these armlets was meant to make them useful in combat. Both men and women wore these armlets – although the ones worn by the women (known as aksa) were lighter than those worn by the men (known as akusha).
