The Naga tribals of Northeast India and Northwest Myanmar have always been known for their woodworking skills, particularly those from the Wancho, Phom and Konyak tribes. Using primitive tools like axes, chisels and 'daos', their traditional machete-like swords, to create their wood carvings resulted in the immediately identifiable crude but strong Naga style. Many of the decorative and utilitarian objects that the Nagas created reflected their animistic beliefs. This stool, likely carved from a single log of wood, is adorned on one side with a row of stylized hornbill heads. Intimately connected with the animal world, for the Nagas the hornbill represents nobility and royalty. When carved on furniture, the hornbill symbolises high status.
