The 'mukha linga' is a covering used to give a face or iconic form to the abstract Shiva lingam, the most sacred form of this powerful god. The face on these coverings, generally made from metal, allowed worshippers to both see and be seen by Shiva, a very important aspect of their ritual. The present example has been made in the round of beaten copper, and has glass eyes.
