BALU JIVYA MASHE

Untitled

Signed in Devnagari (lower right)
Natural pigment on fabric
21.5 x 67.5 in (54.6 x 171.4 cm)

In this work Balu Jivya Mashe, the son of renowned Warli artist Jivya Soma Mashe, offers a scene of contemporary life - in the experience of a train journey - using the traditional Warli visual idiom. The canvas is a long rectangular panel in which the train dominates the picture plain, with various people going about their activities. The artist turns the chaos in and around the train into a rhythmic dance, its movements echoed in the steam bellowing from the engine.
