Bastar, Chhattisgarh

Height: 9.5 in (23.75 cm)
Width: 6.5 in (16.25 cm)
Depth: 2.5 in (6.25 cm)

Bastar is a predominantly tribal district in south Chhattisgarh, where various art and craft traditions with important socio-religious functions are practiced. Created using the 'lost wax' or cire perdue method of casting by professional metal casters known as 'ghadvas', this movable swing on a stand, with seven figures of female deities seated on it, is reminiscent of the larger wooden swings used in temple rituals. The seven figures likely represent the 'seven sisters' or 'mother', a powerful group of goddesses who can either avert or inflict harm depending on how satisfied they are with their worshippers. This finely detailed piece demonstrates the skill and precision of the craftspeople of Bastar.
