A Mace

A Gedha or mace is a powerful weapon, used widely in early warfare. This particular piece is made of bronze. The handle made of wood is a later addition. The piece has an inscription on it in the Malayalam script that reads as: Karamana Grama Samudayam- No. 186. It specifies the place of origin (Karamana). It was owned by a Samudayam or a village committee and was probably used for dramatics.

A Gedha is one of the attributes of Lord Vishnu. It can also be seen held by Dwarapalakas or doorway guardians who stand on either side of the entrance to temples in Southern India. Lord Hanuman is also seen holding a mace. This is an interesting piece of metalwork originating from the South of Kerala.
