DETAILS

Torso

Terracotta
1st - 2nd Century

Kushan Dynasty
Uttar Pradesh

Height: 3.5 in (8.9 cm)
Broken hip upwards, this piece still conveys the graceful movement of the entire body. Based on the style of garment - a broad waist ornament or a mekhla - this can be identified as a woman. The long end of the lower garment hangs over the mekhla in well defined pleats. The posture of the body, one leg relaxed and the entire weight transferred on the other, is suggestive of the tribhanga, where the body is bent at three points, the neck, waist and knee, to bring out a fluid graceful form.

Based on the frontality of the body and the excess border surrounding the figure, this piece could have been made using a single mould. The exact function of such mould made terracotta figurines is not known, but they could have been part of religious offerings.
