DETAILS

Bust of a Goddess or Yakshi

Terracotta
1st - 2nd Century B.C.E.

Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh

Height: 2.5 in (6.4 cm)
This single mould made piece, depicting a woman, could have been created as a votive offering, a semi divine deity or Yakshi, or could simply be a piece for adornment. In this case, it could well be a semi divine spirit or a Yakshi; the iconography of a woman adorned with numerous hair ornaments starting with five or more were in abundant circulation in the Gangetic plains, and this figure with an abundance of pins and flowers in her hair follows a similar mode. She also has a broad necklace and, though only the torso is extant, the rest of the figure could have well continued the heavy ornamentation style, with a 'mekhla' as seen in lot no 33.

Bust of a Yakshi

PROVENANCE:
From the collection of a renowned art historian
