DETAILS

A Nobleman on Horseback

19th Century

Jodhpur School

Size: 10.5 x 7 in (26.7 x 17.8 cm)
This lovely Jodhpur painting shows a tall, handsome, bearded nobleman riding a strong and healthy stallion. He could be proceeding to or returning from an important mission. The nobleman has an attendant footman, holding a hukka or smoking pipe in his hands.

The rider is dressed in a spotless, white full-sleeved jama, over a white churidar. He wears a headgear typical of Rajasthani nobility, in printed orange coloured fabric with a white cloth band around it. A simple but obviously valuable necklace of red rubies adorns his neck. His footwear is a 'mojra' or leather slipper with the toe turned upward, with gold thread embroidery. He is well armed and carries a spear, a shield and a sword that hangs from his waist.

The handsome brown horse is in motion. The animal is very beautifully portrayed and is well braided. The thick, white saddle-cloth is embroidered. The short and stout attendant is dark-skinned and is in white clothing, wearing a turban. The Jodhpur artist has provided a soothing green background to this painting.

This lovely work has a soft colour tone. The composition of the prancing horse and the rider's regal bearing accentuate the beauty.
