Born in Mumbai in 1969, Sanjeev Sonpimpare completed his Bachelor’s degree in painting at the Sir J.J. School of Art there in 1993, followed by a UNESCO-Aschberg Residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin in 2000. Initially practicing as an abstractionist, the artist soon turned to a representational vocabulary that underscored the struggles of life in India’s massive metropolitan cities.

In his works, Sonpimpare reshapes Mumbai street scenes, middle class protagonists, magazine covers, and advertorial images with a tinge of humor. The artist uses photographs, digital interventions, and drawings, working on them together to create large-format canvases that add to the special, theatrical appeal of his work.

Sonpimpare, who writes on art as well, has been represented in several solo exhibitions in Mumbai and Dublin. Since the mid-1990s, his works have been featured in group exhibitions in cities around the subcontinent including Mumbai, Kochi, New Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Kathmandu. In 1992, the artist was awarded the Solomon Abraham First Prize for watercolour portraiture at the Sir J.J. School of Art.

The artist lives in Mumbai and works out of his studio in the city.
