AGRA JAIL CARPET - INDIA

Circa 1930s
Natural indigo blue, vegetable dye
Approx. 6ft 6in x 6ft 7in (198.1 x 200.7 cms)

This cotton carpet woven by the inmates in the jail of Agra is unusually shaped into a square, indicates that the designers of these carpets dipped freely into the vocabulary in terms of design, patterns and historical significance to arrive at designs that straddled diverse traditions and histories. For instance the square shape could have been derived from the Pazryrk carpet, which is the oldest surviving carpet dating back to 500 B.C..
The blank central field in a dull rose pink is most unusual and is contrasted with a blue border with bold stylized flower motifs.
