KASHGAR CARPET - CENTRAL ASIA

Circa 1920s
Natural indigo blue with madder red
Approx. 9ft 6in x 4ft 9in (289.6 x 144.8 cms)

A striking carpet in red and deep blue which almost looks like black, the dark field forms a perfect foil for the red geomteric floral patterns. The motifs are repeated in eight vertical columns and in this long carpet measuring over 9 feet,it could have looked boring but the fact that the motifs vary in size and shape gives a relief and infuses it with a rhythm.
The border has a repeat of the ram's head motif which is a symbol of fertility, heroism, power and masculinity.
The carpet has a beautiful Abrash, the variation in a single hue which breaks the monotony of the piece.
