An extremely rare volume, this 1969 book on contemporary Indian artists was published by the author, P.R. Ramachandra Rao, himself in a limited edition of one thousand copies. Divided into three sections - painting, sculpture and graphic arts - the book is based on a series of lectures on Indian art that Rao delivered at several universities and institutions in the United States, Canada, the Netherlands and Australia. Compiled after several years of working closely with the handful of galleries, early collectors of modern Indian art, and the sixty artists featured in the book, Rao's work in this survey filled a significant lacuna in the literature on the subject at the time.
