Garuda, the vehicle of Vishnu plays an important role in Hindu mythology. This particular sculpture shows him with one knee bend and raised arms denoting his devotion. The quality of casting, detailing and body modelling are commendable. Part from the sheer quality and rich patina this sculpture is important because of an element which is a spillover from the earlier Hoysala Dynasty. The Yalis decorating the rear upper corners are directly derived from typical Hoysala stone architecture. They are also significant because of the fact that this beast used to serve as the emblem of the dynasty as well. At some point of time a standing figure of Vishnu would have been placed above this icon.
