FROM THE COLLECTION OF VIRGINIA AND RAVI AKHOURY (LOTS 106-112) The Virginia and Ravi Akhoury Collection is a distinguished selection of South Asian art, shaped over decades by the Akhourys’ discerning taste and a deep personal connection with the Subcontinent. Ravi Akhoury, a successful businessman and former Chairman and CEO of MacKay Shields, began collecting art early in his career during visits from the United States to India, as a way to stay connected to his roots. Today he holds the title of Trustee Emeritus at the Rubin Museum, serves as a trustee of the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, and sits on the management advisory committee of the Sarasota Art Museum. His wife Virginia Akhoury, who is a devoted pastoral minister, shares his commitment to preserving culture and heritage. Since the 1970s, they have together nurtured a collection that their children and grandchildren continue to engage with today. The Akhourys’ collection spans key figures in modern and contemporary South Asian art, including Jehangir Sabavala, F N Souza, M F Husain, Jagdish Swaminathan, Jamini Roy, Ganesh Pyne, George Keyt, and Anjolie Ela Menon. Many of these works have been acquired directly from the artists or have been special gifts, an indication of the personal relationships that the couple have cultivated over the years. Several works have also been acquired through their patronage of galleries in India and the US, which have shared their goal of supporting and promoting South Asian art globally. Highlights from the Akhourys’ collection have been featured in major exhibitions, including India: Contemporary Art from Northeastern Private Collections at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers in 2002, a 2009 show at Hofstra University alongside the Shelley & Donald Rubin Collection, and exhibitions of modern Indian art at the Rubin Museum in New York between 2011 and 2013. Their works have also been displayed internationally, including at the Tate Modern in London. Carefully curated and deeply meaningful, the Virginia and Ravi Akhoury Collection offers a rare opportunity to experience high quality artworks that speak to a life lived in dialogue with heritage, community, and artistic brilliance.
