Narasimha, Vishnu’s lion avatar, is seen subduing Hiranyakashipu in this sculpture. He is shown comfortably seated on a ledge, the area between the outer and inner portions of the palace, with his enemy held firmly on his lap. The most important aspect of any Narasimha, as is also the case with this piece, is the expression on his face. It is powerful and worthy of the subject. He has small lion-like ears, bulging eyes and a growling mouth. Vishnu’s attributes, the shankhu and chakra, are seen held by the arms at his side. Despite its age, the piece is in good condition with well-preserved hands and faces.
