"The Marvelous Land of Oz" is the second book in the Oz series written by L. Frank Baum, which was first published in 1904. The author's edition of the book was published in 1904 by Reilly & Britton, and it included several changes from the original edition.

One of the major changes made in the author's edition was the inclusion of several new illustrations by John R. Neill, who would later become the primary illustrator for the Oz series. These illustrations are considered by many to be some of Neill's finest work. The author also made some textual changes, such as clarifying certain details about the characters and their motivations.

Another notable change was the addition of a new character, the Sawhorse, who becomes a key figure in the later Oz books. In the original edition, the Saw-Horse was simply a wooden horse that the characters rode on, but in the author's edition, Baum gave the Sawhorse the ability to speak and added him as a recurring character.

Overall, the author's edition of "The Marvelous Land of Oz" is an important piece of Oz history, as it helped Baum to solidify the Oz series as a beloved classic of children's literature and showcases his continued commitment to the world he created, and set the stage for the many books that would follow.

Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) was an American author born in Chittenango, New York, and grew up with a love of storytelling and theater. He is best known for his creation of the Oz series of children's books, including "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and its many sequels, which have become enduring classics of American literature and popular culture.

Baum had a varied career before turning to writing children's books. He worked as a traveling salesman, a newspaper editor, and a theater manager, among other things. He published his first children's book, "Mother Goose in Prose," in 1897, and went on to write over 60 books in a variety of genres.

Baum's Oz books were groundbreaking in their time, featuring strong and resourceful female characters, imaginative and fantastical worlds, and themes of friendship, loyalty, and self-discovery. They have been adapted into numerous films, stage productions, and other media, and continue to inspire generations of readers.

In addition to his writing, Baum was also an early pioneer in the field of motion pictures, producing and directing a number of silent films in the early 1900s. He was also an advocate for women's rights and was involved in various philanthropic causes throughout his life. Despite his success as an author and filmmaker, Baum struggled with financial difficulties throughout his life, and he died of a stroke at the age of 62.
