The book is a historical and archaeological account of the Buddhist pilgrimage site of Bodh Gaya, located in the present-day Indian state of Bihar.

The book covers the history and archaeology of the site, which is believed to be the place where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. Rajendralala Mitra's (1824-1891) work includes detailed descriptions of the Buddhist monuments and temples at Bodh Gaya, along with their historical and religious significance through numerous illustrations and photographs, as well as maps and plans of the site. He was a prominent Indian historian, linguist, and archaeologist, and provided a detailed analysis of the architecture, sculpture, inscriptions, and other artifacts found at the site. Through the book he explored the historical and cultural significance of the various structures at Bodh Gaya, including the famous Mahabodhi temple, and discusses their evolution over time. Also providing insights into the social and cultural context of Buddhism in ancient India.

Mitra's book is considered an important work in the field of Buddhist studies, and it remains a valuable resource for scholars, researchers, and visitors to Bodh Gaya. He was also involved in the Indian independence movement and served as a member of the Bengal Legislative Council.

Most of the lithographic plates are work of the early Bengali engraver-lithographer Ananda Prasad Bagchi (1849-1905).
